Trier, Germany

Trier is a quaint little city near the West border of Germany and situated on the Moselle River. Flanked by centuries old churches, it has the quintessential European Market Square with a central fountain and towering buildings!

Trier houses no fewer than eight UNESCO World Heritage sights! The Porta Nigra, dating back to 180 AD, rests on the north side of the market street and is the largest surviving Roman city gate in the world. There are also other Roman ruins dotting the area including a few Roman baths, a Roman amphitheater, Roman Bridge, and the Imperial throne Room used by the Roman Emperor Constantine. There is a lot of history in a small area!

Trier also boasts a wonderful Christkindlmarkt! Maybe my favorite I have been to with its 3-story pyramid and wooden huts topped with stars! It tends to offer more handmade items than other markets, and still all the treats! Make sure you find the dampfnudel! (a sweet dough dumpling topped with warm vanilla or fruit sauce).

Trier is one of our favorite easy day trips and we have visited a few times!

Attractions

Aside from Roman ruins, Trier has many historic churches. The Church of Our Lady, St. Peters Cathedral, and St. Gangolf are within the Main Market area.
The House of the Three Magi is one of the oldest stone houses in Germany.
The Karl Marx Museum is one of many in Trier. There is a Bishop’s Museum, an Archeology Museum, and even a small Toy Museum.
The Electoral Palace and The Throne room
There is also plenty of shopping and dining options in Trier.

Getting Around

Trier is a very walkable city. The major sites are not too far apart, and a hop-on hop-off bus tour and a tour train are available to help you get around! There are also ample parking garages near major attractions. Walkability 10/10
