Wissembourg France

Located in north-west of France, Wissembourg is a little village on the southern German/French border. It’s in the Alsace region of France, which is know for architecture that has both French and German influences. You will find half-timbered houses and beautiful fountains- little cafés, and bakeries for all your croissant and baguette needs! And of course, French macarons! Many of the villages in the Alsace region are rumored to be the influence behind Belle’s Village in Beauty and the Beast. Wissembourg is one of them- Colmar and Riquewihr are others that have been mentioned. They are very picturesque and romantic…the epitome of a fairy tale village!

Most of the villages in this area are medieval villages dating back to the 8th century. The Gothic style Abbey of Sts Peter and Paul, dates back to the 11th century, and is in the heart of what remains of the “walled city.” Some parts of the wall remain intact and make for a lovely walk around the Old Town. If you have a whole day, you could spend some time hiking the surrounding vineyards and the Romanesque Trail. We just spent the morning walking around the old town, eating croissants, and enjoying the sweet smells of French bakeries!
